I don't remember much about the day I arrived in the United States from the Dominican Republic.
I do remember, however, the dreams I brought with me: I wanted my children to thrive, learn in school and have few worries.

Until recently, those dreams seemed out of reach.
Since moving to Boston 10 years ago, I've been vacuuming, emptying trash and cleaning bathrooms at a big office building in Boston's Financial District.

At first I made $6.75 an hour, which seemed like a lot.
But I quickly learned that I could not come close to affording health care, rent and groceries on that salary.
Now I make about $39 a day and my husband makes $300 a week from his job at a factory.

I also clean two apartments another eight hours a week, but my family and I can barely survive.
My husband, my three sons, my mother and I all live in a tiny three-bedroom apartment in South Boston.

I work hard, pay my taxes and contribute to my community, but my family and I are not being treated like human beings -- and we're not the only ones.

This summer my co-workers and I got involved in the Justice for Janitors campaign, which works to get better wages, decent health insurance and full-time jobs for janitors.

Many cleaners in other cities, who work in buildings owned by the same companies and work for the same cleaning contractors as we do in Boston, have gone through the same fight for affordable health care and decent wages.
Janitors from Los Angeles and Chicago, who have succeeded in uniting to help lift their families out of poverty, are helping us in Boston.
Janitors from other cities are watching what happens here in Boston because next year they have a chance to fight for what their families need.
We have the support of nearly everyone.
Both senators, the mayor, religious leaders, community groups, other unions, students and even some of the nation's largest building owners.
They recognize that our hard work ought to be rewarded.


We are fighting for the American dream.

I want my sons to continue to do well in school.
My oldest earned a full scholarship to the Roxbury Latin School, where he just started as a high-school freshman.

All I want is to earn enough to make sure he and his two brothers have new uniforms and all the supplies they need to focus on school.
It is not too much to ask.

One of the people organizing the janitors strike said she was punched by a supervisor, who was trying to keep his staff from walking out.

私は自分がドミニカ共和国から合衆国に到着した日をほとんど覚えていない，けれども、私が持って来た夢だけは覚えている。
子供たちが丈夫に育ち、学校で学び、そして心配しないでもよいことを。
最近まで、それらの夢は手が届かないと思っていた。
１０年前にボストンに移り、金融街の大きいオフィスビルで働いた。私の仕事は掃除機をかけ、ゴミを空にし、バスルームをきれいにすることだった。

最初、私の時給は６.７５ドルで、それは私にしてみれば高給に思えた。けれども、その給料では健康保険、賃貸料、食料雑貨類を賄うには足りないことを私はすぐに学んだ。
今、私の日給はおよそ３９ドル。そして私の夫は工場で働き週給３００ドルを得ている。


私はまた、２つのアパートで１週間にそれぞれ８時間の清掃の仕事についている。しかし私の家族と私はほとんど生活することができない。私は夫と３人の息子、そして私の母親とサウスボストン地区のちっぽけな３寝室のアパートに一緒に住んでいる。

私は一生懸命働き、税金を支払い、地域共同体に寄付する。
しかし私の家族と私は人間のように扱われていない。
それは私だけではない。

この夏、私と同僚は裁判に参加した。それは管理人のためにもっと良い賃金、適切な健康保険とフルタイムの仕事を手に入れるための運動である。

他の都市で働く多くの清掃人、−彼らはボストンの私達と同様に同じ会社が所有する建物で働き、同じ清掃業務の請負契約をしている者たちーと共同で健康保険と賃金の保証を得る戦いである。
ロサンゼルスとシカゴの管理人たち−彼らはこの戦いですでに成功し、彼らの生活を向上させていた−がボストンで我々を支援してくれている。
他の都市の管理人たちもボストンでの結果を見守っている。なぜなら、来年には彼らの家族の願いをかなえるための機会が得られるかもしれないのだから。
我々はほとんど皆の支持を得ている。
両院議員、市長、宗教リーダー、地域団体、他の組合、学生と、それに少数だけれども大きな建物の所有者も。
彼らは我々のきつい仕事に見合う報酬を与えられるべきであることを認めている。

私達はアメリカンドリームのために戦っている。

私は私の息子たちが良い学生生活を続けて欲しいと願っている。私の長男は自分で ロックスバリー・ラテン校のフルの奨学金を得て、今、彼は高校１年生としてスタートしたばかりです。

私の願いのすべて、それは彼と彼の２人の弟に新しい制服や勉強に専念するために必要なものを与えられるだけの充分な収入を実現すること。
これは、ささやかな願いなのです。
